IN THE LAND OF CEPHIRO
The princess and pillar of the planet - Emeraude- reached out to across lands for help, calling forth "The Legendary Magic Knights" from their own world. These knights were three schoolgirls, unrelated and unaware of what they were doing in a strange new world. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu were left to awkwardly introduce themselves to each other, and then react uncertainly to the ancient boy "magic guru" who appeared to help them. Clef was allowed only enough time to pass on their mission to save the girl-child who's will supported the entire world of Cephiro, and unlock the magic in Hikaru's heart, before the three were separated from him by the attacks of Alcyone, the first of many henchmen to be sent by Zagato, the former priest who guarded the trapped princess so greedily.

Left on their own, the girls stumbled forward, searching for the answers and magic and arms they needed to face their fate, and return home. They would find few answers, but there were allies to help them - Precis to create their swords from the magical stones they found, Ferio to help them through a cursed force, and the strange white creature Mokona to help them along the way. But the greatest help they would find would come from each other, and the friendship that quickly grew and bound them together.

This source of strength didn't just power Umi, like her friends, but transformed her, helping her show the strength and goodwill that hovered below her moody shell. Every step of the way, her fondness for her friends powered her, granting her access to her first water spell to save Hikaru, and to her guardian dragon Ceres, when she proved herself to him by saving her friends from Ascot the monster summoner, and following it up by lecturing the boy for using his "friends" to fight for him.

Ceres was one of three "Mashins" needed to help the girls face Zagato, and when they'd gathered all three, they finally managed to reach his hiding place, and face him. Defeating him should have been the end of their problems, but it turned out they had everything wrong. Zagato hadn't trapped Princess Emeraude. She had trapped herself, waiting for the girls to arrive... so they could kill her. She could not serve as a proper pillar anymore, for her heart had been filled with love for Zagato, and with no choice in putting down her mantle of pillar, and no one in Cephiro capable of killing her, she chose to call her executioner from afar, to free her from her inner conflict, and Cephiro from her poisoned duty to protect it.

But the girls had killed Zagato, and upon realizing it Emeraude's heart filled with hate, transforming her and Cephiro for the worse, and creating a new, stronger enemy for the girls to face. Caught off-guard, the girls didn't understand why the princess turned on them until what little good was left in Emeraude spoke straight from her heart, begging the girls to kill her. They balked at the idea, and hesitated too long, causing the trio to endure many injuries before they finally managed to raise their sword, and kill the girl they thought to save.

Their tragedy wasn't over, though. Emeraude managed one last attack in the same moment as the girls, and struck them down in the same motion. A world away, three classes on a field trip to Tokyo Tower were hit with horror, when with no warning three, unconnected classmates fell down dead.

IN THE TOWN OF ASPHODEL
Nanase thinks she is a transfer from a big city. She spent the first few years of her life there, happily doted on and spoiled by her parents. The family moved when her father's business nearly went bankrupt, forcing him to close most chains. He could get out with a good amount of savings and hone in on running one small town's banking, but it meant the loss of their much higher living standard and going to a public school in Asphodel. She watched her parents' marriage fall apart not from the loss of money, but their old way of life. Used to and happy with city life, they could never quite adjust and it chipped away at the bond between all three.

Nanase did once fence, sew, and bake at one point, but the fencing caused tension between her parents and her sewing and cooking were activities with the mother she now avoids. Instead Nanase has honed in on swimming and school, to the point of compulsion. Despite this, she struggles in school on a social level, since her confident snobbish air is a little more rickety than Umi's.
